Bratislava Municipal Assembly Approves City-Wide Wagering Prohibition
The new prohibition will prevent casinos from operating in Bratislava, and all other kinds of gaming venues will be closed down.

However, bingo halls will be permitted to continue operating, as well as betting shops and other forms of in-person betting.

The prohibition will not take effect immediately, with the Municipal Assembly permitting all licensed operators to continue providing gambling services until their licenses expire. The Municipal Assembly will no longer accept any new license applications, nor will it permit operators to renew their existing licenses.

Most operators’ licenses are valid until 2023 or 2024, meaning the impact of the prohibition will not be felt for at least two years.

The prohibition comes after the Municipal Assembly received a petition signed by over 70,000 Bratislava residents in September requesting a ban on gambling in the city.

“The Municipal Assembly has done everything in its power to ensure that the will of the people expressed in the petition is met,” it stated in relation to the subsequent prohibition.
