Australians Overwhelmingly Want Gambling Ads Gone

A new survey from the Land Down Under shows that a massive 70% of Australians are fed up with those annoying gambling commercials on their televisions.

The Australia Institute, a research group, surveyed over 1,000 people nationwide about prohibiting certain advertisements. When it came to gambling, a mere 11% wanted them to stay. It appears everyone’s had enough, right?

Male or female, young or old, the majority of Australians believed it was time to ditch those gambling promotions. Even the senior citizens were eager for a shift, with almost 80% of those over 60 giving gambling ads the thumbs down.

This is a major issue in Australia, particularly with the footy finals being broadcast. The authorities have regulations about when and where these ads can appear, but with more and more Australians glued to the game, some individuals, such as MP Zoe Daniel, believe it’s time for stricter measures. She’s concerned about the normalization of gambling, especially among young men, and wants to see safeguards put in place to protect them.

A 2021 investigation by Nielsen revealed that the gambling sector in Australia expended almost $287.2 million AUD (roughly $196.9 million USD) on marketing. This substantial expenditure enables the industry to engage young individuals through diverse avenues and normalize gambling conduct. The investigation also examined the promotion of other detrimental products such as cigarettes, unhealthy food, alcoholic beverages, and fossil fuels, further stressing the necessity for more stringent regulations to safeguard susceptible demographics.
